Workspace tour and get to know me

I’ve been wanting to share my studio space for a long time, but the timing never felt right, or I the photos didn’t come out the way I wanted. I kid you not the last studio shoot I did was almost perfect, but I forgot to change the camera ISO from 1200 to a much much lower setting. All the photos came out grainy. Anyways I did some digging around and found an artists tag* to pair with the photos, just to make things a little more interesting.

Is there anything you regret regarding your own work?

I regret not doing any personal creative work after college graduation. My need to become a respectable adult and the harsh criticism I received about my works senior year destroyed my ability to make anything for a few years. The closest I got to creative work was at my job as newspaper designer. Last year I found out about Skillshare and began taking classes in flower arranging, which led to illustration, design and photography classes. I still don’t feel 100% proud of my creative work, however I’m very excited and hopeful to see how things play out over the next few years.

Who are your favorite artists?

  • Monet

  • David duChemin

What are your current top 5 favorite songs

According to Spotify my current favorite songs are
1 New rules by Dua Lipa
2 IDGAF by Dua Lipa
3 If you love me by Brownstone
4 Love me right by Amber Mark
5 Boomerang by Jidenna

My life has been drama free for a while, so I'm not sure how I ended up listening to those songs so much.

What inspired you to get into drawing and photography?

Like most kids, I liked to draw whenever I had a chance. I kept a two binders full of drawings covered in protective plastic sheets. I regret throwing the binders away before going away to college. Last year when my creative journey began again I started heavily watching YouTube videos by various female illustrators. Their passion and joy over what they did inspired me to try out watercolor painting, and digital illustration

I remember buy a point and shoot film camera as a kid with my own money. I don’t remember if I actually used it, or how I got the money, but I do remember it was silver and it had a black wristlet strap. Freshman year I bought my first and current DSLR a Canon Rebel XS with the 18-55 mm kit lens. Teaching myself how to use the camera was a struggle for me so that summer I woke up 6 am to drive 1.5 hours to another town to take a 4 hours a day 5 times a week photography class. I loved the class and obsessively photographed everything that summer. In the fall I transferred to another college and talked to one of the Arts professors about wanting to become a photographer. The professor, never having seen my work told me straight up that I did not have the talent to become a photographer. I shot for the yearbook club, and I took a film photography class a couple years later. This time around different bloggers, photographers, and content creators inspired me to pick up the camera again.

What do you enjoy doing the most?

I enjoy eating, reading, the gym, and going on adventures. If I had to choose one thing, I wouldn’t be able to choose one because I love them all the same. Each activity brings different types of joy to my life.

Is there something you want to learn how to do better?

I want to learn more about branding photography, personal branding, and branding in general.

Do you have any special circumstances for when you start working?

For my afternoon job I only need an assignment and a deadline in order to get started. However in my personal work, it’s not as simple. I have to begin working as soon as I wake up. If I give myself time to stay in bed, think, or make breakfast, I’ll lose the entire day. I’ll always find a reason to not get started.

Oh wow it’s almost lunch time… I guess I can’t start that personal project today
Ah man, work starts in 30 minutes. I can’t write that blog outline now
Dang it! I’ve been up for 3 hours already, guess I’ll try again next monday.

What’s a big project dream of yours?

Right now one of my biggest dreams is to live life on my own terms and work for myself. In order to do that I have to create a much stronger brand, and a consistent online presence. Besides those two things, I still need to level up my skills.

Have you done something lately that you are proud of?

Yes! I have, but I can’t tell you about it yet.
